GIF Picker for YouTube (PC)
YouTube currently lets you send GIFs in comments only on mobile. This script brings that to the desktop site: a GIF button appears next to the emoji button in every comment and reply box.
Features
- Search Tenor or paste a Tenor link or GIF ID
- Preview before posting. The picked GIF is attached to the comment box, and you can add your own text and then press Comment (or Post GIF)
- Featured GIFs with page arrows (the next page loads in the background)
- Categories with a still preview image for each one, built in plus your own
- Fully customizable categories:
- Drag category tiles to reorder them, or move them between groups
- Remove a tile with the × that appears on hover
- Add your own tile (any search keyword) with + Add your own
- Press Edit to rename category groups, move them up and down, add new ones or delete them
- Reset brings the built-in categories back
Recent GIFs and Favorites (drag to reorder, or sort by most used)
Light and dark theme, translucent glass look, keyboard friendly (Esc closes it)
Respects reduced motion, reduced transparency and high contrast settings
Compatibility
- Works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers with Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey.
- Firefox: use Violentmonkey or Tampermonkey, Firefox 115 or newer. Firefox support is untested, so reordering tiles by drag and drop may not work there. Please report anything that misbehaves in the Feedback tab.
- Greasemonkey is not supported.
How to use
- Open any YouTube video and click into the comment box (or press Reply).
- Click the GIF button next to the emoji button.
- Search or browse, then click a GIF to attach it.
- Write a message if you like, then press Comment.
Good to know
- YouTube only accepts GIFs that Tenor rates G. The picker asks Tenor for G-rated results only.
- If YouTube refuses a GIF, nothing is posted and the GIF stays attached so you can pick another.
- This relies on how YouTube's mobile GIF comments work behind the scenes. If YouTube changes that, the script may stop working until it's updated.
Privacy
- The script only talks to
tenor.com and tenor.googleapis.com (cookies are not sent).
- Favorites, recent GIFs, custom categories and category previews are stored locally in your userscript manager. Nothing is sent to me.
