Don't Track Me Google

A zero-configuration privacy userscript for Google Search. Runs on its own, or as a plugin for Hide Web Elements Pro.

Don't Track Me Google removes Google's redirect wrappers, click tracking, referrers, tracking parameters, AMP wrappers, telemetry beacons and tracking pixels, and keeps protecting content that loads later. Everything is on by default. There is no settings panel, no menu, and nothing stored in browser storage.

How to install

  1. Install a userscript manager for your browser (skip this if you already have one):
  2. Click Install this script at the top of this page, or use the direct link: Don't Track Me Google (.user.js).
  3. Confirm the install in your userscript manager.
  4. Open google.com. It works immediately, with nothing to configure.

On Chrome-based browsers, if scripts don't run, turn on Allow User Scripts (or Developer mode) for your userscript manager in the browser's extension settings.

More help: How to install user scripts

Two modes, one script

  • Standalone: install it and it just runs, starting at document-start.
  • Hide Web Elements Pro plugin: if Hide Web Elements Pro (25.1 or newer) is installed, the script registers itself as a plugin automatically. You then control it from the ⿻ Plugins tab: on/off, run on specific sites, pause all, uninstall.

It adds no tab, dock button or settings of its own in either mode.

Using it as a Hide Web Elements Pro plugin

  1. Install Hide Web Elements Pro (direct install link).
  2. Install Don't Track Me Google as a separate userscript. Install order doesn't matter.
  3. Open a Google page. Hide Web Elements Pro shows a "new plugin detected" message. Reload the page once more and the plugin loads.
  4. Open the Hide Web Elements Pro panel, go to ⿻ Plugins, and find Don't Track Me Google. Use the switch to turn it on or off, and ⚙ Manage to choose which sites it runs on.

Plugin mode notes
  • Turning the plugin off, pausing plugins, or blocking a site really switches the protections off. Turning it back on restores them.
  • Without Hide Web Elements Pro installed, nothing changes: the script simply runs standalone.
  • To remove it completely, uninstall it in the Plugins tab and then delete the script in your userscript manager.

What it does

  • Removes redirect wrappers so links go straight to their destination.
  • Removes click tracking: ping, inline mouse/click handlers and Google tracking attributes.
  • Strips Google tracking parameters such as gclid, ved, ei, aqs, sxsrf, gs_lp, sclient and gad_source.
  • Strips destination tracking parameters: utm_*, fbclid, msclkid, ttclid, li_fat_id, srsltid, _gl, igsh and more.
  • Unwraps AMP URLs to the original page.
  • Removes referrers with a document-wide no-referrer policy and noreferrer on links.
  • Blocks tracking beacons sent through sendBeacon, fetch and XMLHttpRequest, including GA4 collect calls and ad-network endpoints.
  • Blocks tracking pixels loaded through images and preload/prefetch links.
  • Protects dynamic content with a MutationObserver, event interception and a guard on late href rewrites.
  • Supports open Shadow DOM and single-page navigation.
  • Turns SafeSearch off on Google web search URLs and search forms.

What's new in 3.0.0

  • Dual mode: standalone or Hide Web Elements Pro plugin.
  • Every protection is now fully reversible, so the plugin on/off switch really works.
  • SafeSearch is no longer forced on Google Images, because Google reportedly returns unrelated results there when a safe value is present.
  • Fixed the fetch guard missing URL-object arguments, and relative links being rewritten to absolute ones needlessly.
  • Much less work on each page change: no more full rescans on every DOM update.
  • More tracking parameters, prefixes (utm_*, hsa_*) and beacon endpoints covered.

Compatibility

  • Google Search and other pages under google.com. Google now redirects its country-specific domains to google.com, so one match covers them.
  • Tampermonkey, Violentmonkey, Greasemonkey and other userscript managers, on desktop and mobile.
  • Needs @grant none (already set) so it can guard the page's real network and DOM functions.

Troubleshooting

There is no on-page interface. A startup line is logged to the browser console on Google pages. If it doesn't appear, the userscript wasn't injected. Check that it is enabled and that your manager is allowed to run user scripts.

Privacy approach

This script targets the tracking built into Google result links, navigation, telemetry requests and destination URLs. It does not block normal Google navigation. It is not a replacement for a content blocker, DNS filter or general privacy extension.
